Hate Brigade: Death trip

02/07/06  ||  Lord K Philipson

Hate Brigade comes from my hometown and is featuring Rickard Alriksson’s (ex-Nasum, The Accidents, TPH live-guitarist at one point, pro-wrestler wannabe at another, etc etc) little brother Tomas (a exact but smaller copy of Big R himself) doing bass-duties. How’s that for very important info?

Hate Brigade isn’t exactly overwhelming me with their music, nor are they Teh Suck De Luxe. Rather something in the middle of those 2 terms. The 3 short (the longest one is 2:44) songs featured here suffers from a dull production with no punch whatsoever to it. That is accompanied by some metal of sorts, not really sure what to compare it to. At times Hate Brigade sounds death metal, other times they sound like something else, not quite as brutal. The performances are decent at best and one could wish for a bit more tightness here and there, but hey… It’s a demo. And probably their first one. If not, it sure feels like it.

There are some god-awful attempts at blasts (or whatever it’s supposed to be) by drummer Björn. I have a better chance of getting a medal in figure-skating than this guy does in a blast-competition.

What it comes down to is that Hate Brigade needs to grow with the songwriting. A few of the riffs actually hints at some kind of groove (the opening-riff of “Never regrow” is a good example), but the complete offering does not.

I can do nothing but wish them luck, they need it.
